National Indoor Show Jumping Championships 2008 On Saturday 5th April several junior members and their parents started off on their journey to Hartpury and what a journey it was!! From what I can gather they all enjoyed a lovely team meal in a pub down the road – however one or two of the juniors have informed me that a little too much alcohol was consumed by a few adults (Corrie and Terri)! Unusually it was the juniors telling their parents to be quiet so they could get some sleep! Sunday morning arrived, along with the snow! The dressage arenas were white over and the boards had disappeared! Anyway snow or no snow the competition was carrying on. It was time for the course walk and I think a few stomachs were churning over the size of the fences – the course was twisty and up to height. The stables suddening became very busy with people plaiting and tacking up. First up for the flyers were Pete and Dream, a lovely clear, first for the foxes were Charlotte and King, another lovely clear. A quick cup of tea and it was Laura and Time, a solid clear but we will forget what happened before and after your round Laura! A nervous Zoe and Maverick were next, it was their first Championships, but she held her nerve and they produced a ‘steady’ clear. Onto our third riders, Rebecca and Freckles came out and took the pressure off Georgia by going clear. Next was a nervous Helen and Poppy, again it was their first championships, but she had remembered what Amanda had taught her and they produced a lovely clear taking the pressure off Pete. Finally we had Georgia and Magic for the flyers and Pete and Ringo for the foxes, not to be out done by their team mates, both produced lovely clears. Although Ringo’s line into the skinny wall was hmmm interesting Pete!!! A quick check with Helen, our chief scorer, revealed we were the only two teams to have 4 clears. Although five other teams had finished on clear, as it is the best three scores to count. A quick lunch was provided by Jane Holman as well as numerous cups of tea, which were very much appreciated. For those of you that don’t know, Malcom, (Polly) makes a lovely brew! A special mention must go to the ‘grooms’ – Katie, Emma and Ciara, who helped the teams and gave them, and me, much needed support. Although I can not remember why Ciara decided it would be a good idea to have a spelling test with me in the collecting ring – perhaps it was to keep me calm?! It was soon 12.45pm and time for the second course walk – they had changed the course and made the turns a little easier although the tricky treble was now the final fence. The second round began – Pete went clear again but Charlotte unfortunately had a stop at the first but completed to gain just 4 faults. Laura did another lovely clear with no problems before or after her round this time! Zoe had to work extremely hard for her 4 faults and I think everyone was jumping the fences with her! Speedy Rebecca was next but Freckles just clipped the third fence, which meant they finished on 4 faults. Then it was Helen’s turn who unfortunately just rubbed two fences and over shot the final element of the treble but it was a superb effort for her first Championships. Finally it was Georgia, the pressure was on, we needed a clear. Despite nearly falling off and jumping the treble with one stirrup she pulled it off! The flyers had finished on a double clear. Pete followed Georgia into the ring and he too was made to work for his clear round. This meant the foxes finished on 8 faults. Everyone raced to the gallery to check the scores with Helen; only two other teams could finish on a double clear. It was nerve racking waiting for the other riders to jump but it turned out they couldn’t handle the pressure and had fences down. We had done it; Nantwich Flyers were the National Champions. To top it off Nantwich Foxes finished 8th, which was fantastic as half the team was made up of first timers. A lovely presentation followed and both teams entered the arena to collect their prizes. Although there was no way I was going into the arena to have my picture taken! Everyone had a fab weekend and I was impressed at how much team spirit the juniors showed – they all helped each other and are a credit to the club. Well done, Jan and I are very proud of you all.
